'Hammering' a Perfectly Good Guitar

Well I have been looking for a project to do for a while and decided to 'relic' a Fender electric guitar. I am not really into guitars, though I have always seen them as objects of beauty. With Colton's gift for music we have always had several 'floating' around. So anyway, this is the result of my first attempt. It started out as a brand new 2009 Fender Starcaster. I 'reliced' it to look like a '62 Fender Stratocaster complete with vintage pickups and pinup girls. Click on the pictures for a better view.

The project was a lot of fun, though I am not sure what to do with it now except for hanging it on the wall near our music room.

These are a few more closeups. The idea of a relic is to make it look well used and worn. There are a lot of 'relics' for sell in the $2,000- $4,000 price range. Of course, they are a lot better than my first attempt.

Anyway, now I need a new project to keep myself entertained. Any ideas?
Maybe, I should write a novel? ;-}

Looks like a fun project. You've done a good job on the guitar. The stickers were a good touch. Wish I had a 3-d version of the pin-up girls.

As far as a new project, I think you are on the right track with the novel. Since the in thing is men with powers, like Harry Potter and Edward the vampire, you should write about a man who can walk on water and is heavily loaded with weapons and ammo.

Looks like a cool project. Next time you should follow the progress step by step.

I think you should learn to play at least one song that you can play on your own guitar. That will help you show it off even more.

I like the idea of playing a song (maybe a "relic" song) on the guitar to show it off. I think it looks pretty cool. I wish I could play better.

Road biking may be a fun activity! You can get in good shape, see some nice scenery, even start biking to work or something. I am surprised the rush I get while on my bike. It makes exercise seem more like fun and less like work.

Where can I get some of those pin-up girl stickers?

Yeah Russell, a novel may be the way to go, maybe a novel about a pinup girl vampire with magical superpowers?

Amby, you are right on the 'step by step' thing. Very few readers of my blog will understand what it took to get it to this point. Things like 'tumbling' all of the brass in pea gravel, and Russell and I rewiring and soldering the electronics until 1:00a in the morning could have made for a good blog or two.

Erin,

Yes, I should learn to play. Maybe my relic song be 'Bicycle" by Queen.

Cycling is very cool and is really getting a strong following around here also. I guess it would be a paradigm shift for me to walk past my Harley to start peddling, but maybe I should give it a try.

Abe,

The history of the pinup girls and Fender goes back to the Fifties and Sixties. From what I read Fender distributed pinup girl calendars which as you can imagine were very popular. Guys started cutting these girls out and laminating them to their guitars.

Bob wasn't happy about their inclusion on my 'relic' and was quite angry with me for a couple of days. I stuck to my guns though for the sake of the project's integrity, --and other reasons. ;-)

Bob just gets tired of the stereotypical, cliche' man. Aren't we all supposed to trying to rise to something higher?

Who is Bob?

I like how Bob just referred to himself in the 3rd person.

I've been asking the "Who's Bob?" question for some time now. He's pretty mysterious!

that turned out really nice! i especially like how you browned the neck and the how flat you got the black. I noticed you can get some 60's vintage-like "saddles" for 6-8bucks. Seems like that would be the final piece of the puzzle.

Abe,

You need to ask the question "what about Bob?", you might get the answers you are looking for.

Colt, I am glad you like it. Hopefully, it will play well.

I would be interested in the saddles, if you want to send me the link. You probably noticed I didn't swap out the tuners. The drilled holes were too large. It would require a new blank neck and some drilling to use the old style tuners, maybe another project.

Also, when you are home next I will have you check my setup, since I really don't know what I am doing there, or even the theory of the pickup adjustments, etc.

yeah I'll gladly set it up to the best of my abilities next time i'm back. I couldn't find the first link that I found that had the saddles for cheap. The cheapest i've been able to find is around 20dollars.

There may be a way to get the tuners to work, i'll have to see what it looks like.
